Sick of me saying the same thing over and over again. Let me start by apologizing to all the super smart and creative people that I'm referring to. Marketing (for me) is about one thing: making an emotional connection. The purer the better. Nothing better in my world than a gimmick-free connection between audience and brand. If an emotional connection can be made between people and a brand then the skys' the limit. Every other metric of success (if you need to measure) can be an afterthought once a 'that connecton' is made.

Here are 2 examples of us trying to make the emotional connection using Facebook:

First, let's talk about 'Being in the Moment'. You know when you are at an event and you see someone you know. You say hello, ask 'How are you doing?" but suddenly start looking over each other's shoulders and side-to-side looking for the next person to go say hello too. This really bugs me, but it happens. We have all been there.

Then sometimes you are in the moment .... Being in the moment with a person; listening to them, replying, making eye contact, appropriate body language. Such a better feeling.

Brands can do this too.

I've learned from my experience as a Marketing Director is the radio business for over a decade and now in this "new" industry of Social Media. If you can 'be in the moment' then you will have success.

Here are some examples (using the Toronto Maple Leafs). I've noticed what posts on Facebook really resonate with fans, based on the three metrics of likes, comments, and shares.

This was one of the most shared and liked posts on our Facebook Wall. It was totally inspired by an internal work email from a colleague All I did was repost the words from "In Flanders Fields" (which was in this internal email) and shortly before 11am on Remembrance Day, I also added a recent video of the Leafs Remembrance Game Pre Game Tribute. It was a really moving tribute and felt it was a nice compliment. I posted it. No sell. No "ask". Just trying to connect with what was happening in the moment on Remembrance Day.

Another example of being in the moment. The Leafs hosted the Bruins the other night and it was not pretty. A colleague of mine (Matt Iaboni) and I had a plan to experiment with video throughout the night. It was going well, but then the score got out of hand. (If you live in the sports world then you know, you live & die by wins & losses) We had a cool concept to try and live the game experience with fans through video they may not be able to see or get anywhere else (maybe I can explain this better in another post down the road, once I compile all of the examples) We used our Youtube channel, a video service called Keek, and TwtVideo to try and tell a story. We also planned on using pictures throughout the night to help assist in the story telling.

Here's the example: When we post a score on Facebook that involves the team winning, then it usually gets shared, liked and commented on. When we post a score that involves the team losing, then it usually doesn't get shared. Instead of making that "text" post we posted this photo. It showed the final score on the scoreboard (sorry Leafs fans for bringing up bad memories) It also showed the venue was clearing out and the Zamboni driving by. The reason I'm sharing this with you in that I believe that since it was 'in the moment' for fans it was shared, regardless of the scoreline. Also the comments were significantly higher from the norm, and I can also assume that the photo sparked this dialogue.

These are just two recent examples of a brand, The Toronto Maple Leafs, trying to make an emotional connection with fans through Facebook.

What are some other brands (sports team or not) trying to make this connection?

Have you ever been "in the moment" with a brand on Facebook?

Thanks for reading.
::js

5 Tips for Aspiring Social Media / Community Managers.

I worked in the radio business for over a decade. It was a blast. Now that I work in this "new" industry. This Social Media industry, many have commented to me, "It must be such a dramatic change"... "How is it that you went from a Marketing Director position to a Social Media Manager position?" ... "From radio to sports" and so on. My answer is simple... nothing has changed. I pretty much have done the same thing my entire career. All I do is try and connect with people. The tools have changed over the years but the emotional connection that one has with music, sports, friends, will never change.

Enter the Social Media person.

Sure, I'm not a huge fan of the term 'Social Media', but it looks like it's sticking around.

Here's are 5 tips for aspiring Social Media Managers / Community Managers:

1) Your job will be 24/7: No joke. Let's say (in the future) you manage a company Twitter account and a customer asks you a question; they deserve an answer right away, right? It will be up to you and the people you collaborate with to decide what is an acceptable timeline is to reply back. You'll decide this through brainstorming and penning your Social Media or Engagement Strategy. I might suggest that if you wait more than a day, then you missed an opportunity to connect. Customers, clients, fans, friends will expect a quick turnaround and that's just the world we live in. (I'll write a full post on this topic in the future) Just know that representing a company or brand is not really 9 to 5, Monday to Friday. If you are looking for 9 to 5 with weekends off, then maybe this is not for you.

2) Your Background & Experience: I've noticed that 'experts' come from all sorts of backgrounds: PR, Communications, Marketing, Agency, etc. That's the good news. You can come from any stream of schooling and probably do very well. Take time to learn the craft. Learn from others. Find mentors and mentor others. This new Social Media Industry does not have any standards in place for self promoting (nor does any industry, i guess) So go ahead and call yourself an expert, but be warned; a phony will be sniffed out over time.

3) Network: They are events pretty much every night. This is not an open invitation to go drinking every night. Go with a plan. Look ahead to the guest list. Pick out some people you want to meet and go and meet them. Sure some events turn into a fun game of guess the avatar, but just don't be shy! Go to enough events and soon you will be the person people are trying to meet and network with. Networking events are great relationship starters, but remember; it's just the start. After the event, it's up to you to keep that relationship going.

4) Your job (to find a job) is 24/7. Looks just like point 1, right? Think about everything you do and say. That blurry line between life/work balance is, well, blurry. Think about the successful career ahead of you and put together your plan. Your plan to grow, learn and be the best at what you do. Does this plan include ripping a major retailer online? What if they are hiring a Social Media Manger a month later? Would you apply? Yikes. Your words and actions are being documented (by you) and may live forever online. It's a scary thought, but learn to embrace it and you will have no trouble at all. Like the guy (who shall remain nameless) who rips the Toronto Maple Leafs and Leafs TV every single chance he gets. I mean, totally rips them - swear words all all. Imagine my surprise when he asks me to follow him one day so he can send me a DM. That DM was asking for a job helping me in the Social realm for the Leafs. It was a real challenge to take that seriously.

5) Be Yourself. I don't think I can elaborate on this.

Hope you enjoyed this post. I would like to know what you think either by leaving comments or connecting with me elsewhere. Like one of those networking events where I'll be drinking my face off wearing a tie around my head.

Thanks for reading.
js
<a Look out for that!
I seem to be connecting many people to... um... many people.
Excited for Toronto FC and making the Champs League group stage.

I'm thinking that when it's all said and done, the guy in the pic below could very well be the best player in MLS history.

Until next time...
js

Story in BlogTO.

Check out the story in BlogTO.

The article is a nice piece on what we are doing as an organization to engage fans. A step in the right direction, but we have a long way to go. That's one thing I love about Social Media. It's constantly evolving. It's never perfect. With every interaction, we can learn. We learn from each other and our communities. Toronto Maple Leafs fans are amazing. I learn from listening to them. I also learn from Raptors fans and TFC fans. These communities has allowed me to be a part of them... and I thank them for that.

Some exciting stuff in the future with these brands.
I'll do my best to keep you posted.
until next time...
js

How this tree is like Social Media.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mwf5KZMOErU/S0poUlHifYI/AAAAAAAAACE/XWK4GEmM3Uc/s400/002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425263403891588482" />
Writing a note. Remember that? The original Social Media. The picture to the side is a tree in my local dog park. You see, each year (around Xmas) people post notes and decorations on the tree. It's like a community tree for dog owners, hikers, and people just out for a stroll. It usually fills up pretty quickly with random stuff. I see it almost every day. Then something happened... someone hung a notebook - a blank notebook and a pen - allowing for comments. This was amazing. It allowed anyone walking by with a thought or opinion, the chance to be a part of it. I love it! It's kinda like social media. Someone somewhere starts something and then people keep adding to it. It's how communities get built. This is how it works. Sure there are many tree analogies I oould make, but I just love the simplicity. One person hung something and then it snowballed. (first time I have ever used snowballed in a sentence) It probably started with a decoration and evolved to the notebook (which is full of comments, btw)

So I went past the tree today (Jan 10/10) to see what was left from the holidays and some pretty windy weather. Some stuff still hangs and some has long blown away. I did notice a hand made ornament saying 'Can't we all just share the park?" It was signed "The Coyotes"

later,
js

Boobies, Fighting, Tigers, Leafs, Raptors, and more...

Greetings,
Been a while.

Watching a lot of Leafs and Raptors.
Halloween was fun. Deya was a tiger.
Been noticing many LinkedIn updates recently. Kinda making a comeback.
Haven't been enjoying TUF Heavyweight Season like I thought I would. The Kimbo thing was good for the first few, but then that went away.
Enjoying a writer I work with named Mike Ulmer. Great writer and good guy.
Working on the BoobyBall 8 was fun. The "I Heart Boobies" campaign was good, but it was the viral video that the committee (spearheaded by a girl named AJ that I don't know too well) seemed to totally take off. Everyone was talking about it. Great stuff.

I heard someone say "All of us is smarter then one of us" the other day and that stuck with me.

Oh, Here's something I've been working on
later,
js

Daddy!!

So Deya turned 2 a couple of weeks ago.

The celebration included a trip to a cottage and visits to Oma and Opa in Ottawa.
Ottawa is a beutiful city, especially the country/valley just outside of Ottawa.
I think back to a job I passed on a few years back in Ottawa. At the time, it was a great offer... good money, good people, all the perks... yadda yadda. I think The Breakfast Club had the most influence on me. The dissection of the cliques, the principal, the janitor, detention, and the common bond of having parents who just didn't 'get' it. Who can ever forget the final scene: the Dear Mr Vernon letter & Simple Minds. Powerful stuff.

I also loved Ferris. I wanted to be him, or at least hang out with him. We all knew a 'Cameron'. Maybe you were Cameron? We all still laugh when someone says 'Abe Froman, The Sausage King of Chicago'.

There are many other Hughes flicks that had an impact on me and they probably had an impact on you too. The work lives on... so go and rent something... and enjoy.

cheers for reading.
js

My Writing Career

So I just finished up my first five articles for a career-themed magazine that launches in September. The editor seemed pretty happy about my submissions, which is cool.

The funny thing is - I'm really not much of a writer. I just kinda think of things and start typing. My speling and grammar really suck. It's all stream of consciousness.

I think back to all those email communications I wrote for the radio station I used to work at; and they had pretty much the same feel. Just whatever was on my mind. My dog, the fights, footy, TV, music, movies, whateves. Those emails went out to over 300, 000 people... but I designed them to feel like it was a one on one relationship. (Note: I'm actually surprised that of all the stuff other media copied from the station, this 'style' of audience communication wasn't one of them) It was 'just an email between friends.' It seemed to really work. After all, the database in question was only 14,000 members when I found it) I wonder if readers of this new magazine will get the same vibe. Once those words get officially published, I'll share them with everyone. Would love to hear what you think.

Anyhoo... Not sure if I'll actively search out writing opportunities... Probably not. like I said, I'm not much of a writer.

cheers for reading.
js

Martin Streek

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 122px; height: 162px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mwf5KZMOErU/SlNPsX3Dx3I/AAAAAAAAAB8/yIbmfZYCpcs/s400/PictureMartinPic2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355712005611439986" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 122px; height: 162px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mwf5KZMOErU/SlNPsPQDn5I/AAAAAAAAAB0/xtyMs9BYj_g/s400/Martinpic1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355712003300368274" />
Martin was a colleague and a friend.
We worked together for 6 years.
He was an amazing person.

I'd like to share this little ritual we had...

Sometime during summer, Martin would come into my office at the station. He'd shut the door and pull up a chair. He'd have this look in his eyes, like a little kid at Christmas. His energy was contagious. I knew what was about to happen...

He'd give me 3 hints on what his Halloween costume would be this year and I'd have a chance to guess what it is. His costumes were always so elaborate. Over the six years of trying to guess, I never even came close. (That's Martin above in his "Uncle Sam" costume.)

Fast Forward

I met with Martin a few weeks back to discuss 'what's next' for him. He had some amazing ideas. We were all pretty excited about a future that included working together once again.

This is a real shock. Martin will be missed by so many.
Prayers to his friends, family and fans.
js

below photo: flickr.com/photos/mbake

<a I spend all day on it. It's a huge part of my business. Twitter is the perfect social media forum... Here's why:

1)Short attention spans unite! Keeping things under 140 characters allows just enough text to get your message out there, post a link, and/or show some creativity. At the same time 140 characters is not enough space to ramble.

2)It's not exclusive. I don't need permission to be a part of a world. If I choose to follow, then I follow. If someone chooses to follow me, then they can. Be my guest.

3) Less me, More us. I will do you a favour and not show you the 72 pictures from my weekend at the cottage and you will do me a favour and not ask me to join many groups or play many games like f'n Knighthood.

4) Instant info. If you see something in the Trending Topics, then it's news happening right now. You do not need to sign up to someones breaking news alerts, to receive breaking news. It's always breaking on Twitter.

5) Experimental. You can say whatever you want. Tweet & ReTweet away! (Just remember that whatever you say is forever and your name usually appears right next to your tweet)

@BigThinkerJon

js

True Story: Runaway Baby

There I was, walking down a busy street, when I see this 2 or 3 year old just kinda standing there. She was about 3 steps away from getting hit by a car. There was no parent in sight. She was carrying a red ball with yellow dots. It looked like a ball that would bounce if you gave it the chance. About 20 feet away was a mother with her 2 children watching and leaning towards, like she was about to take action. She yelled out "is that your child?", I shook my head in the manner that one would shake their head to say "no". I stood in the way of the little girl. She just smiled and turned another way.

There was a door to a nearby building that was propped open. Maybe the child came thru that door? I popped my head in and screamed "HELLO!"... no answer. Just then I see an elderly lady scoop the toddler up and run into a nearby drugstore. I run to the window and look in. The lady puts the little girl into a stroller. Her stroller. The lady continued to sample something at the make-up counter.

I'm assuming Grandma had baby on this day and that in a split second baby just sort-of shuffled out of sight.

She was only 3 steps away.

js

Love Thy Weekend - Short Blog

Aren't weekends great?

js

Sorry Blog. Sometimes it's my business.
Sometimes people even pay me to create and execute campaigns thru social media. So needless to say, I spend a lot of time online; Twitter, facebook, etc.

But I am no expert. I repeat. NOT AN EXPERT. Not even close.

Although... I have noticed that there sure are a lot of experts out there.
I like that I'm surrounded by so many experts.
It's like if you went swimming. Wouldn't it be so much better to go swimming with dozens/hundreds of lifeguards?

I'm not judging. After all, my company is called Big Thinker. I guess I'm making a claim right there. Truth be told, someone else came up with the name for me. I'm not really a 'naming' expert either. lol.

What qualifications do u need to be a Social Media Expert?

I'm curious to know what u think.

js

Making Lists & Eating Lunch & Left Over Cake in the Kitchen/Boardroom

the two things i kinda miss about working in a more traditional office environment are:

1) making lists
I found that i was in a constant state of making lists. a 'to-do' list for this, a 'work-back schedule' for that. I always tried to teach the people around me that you gotta write everything down. I do not write everything down now, but I do miss 'lists' a little bit. (maybe that's why I'm writing this entry?)

2) eating lunch
It's so much easier to go eat around lunchtime when someone says 'hey let's go eat lunch'. I do not have that person in my world anymore. So I'm at the dogpark yesterday and I see this lady fall to the ground. I run over and she says her hip and legs hurt. She can't get up and can't walk. Long story short, me and Christian pick her up (actually mostly Christian did the lifting) and sat her on a bench. She (who's name turns out to be Joan) did not want us to call the paramedics. She said "they have more important things to do." So I told her my friend was a paramedic and he lived up the street. She agreed. I called 911. She then said "I can't feel my legs." A little bit scary.

Turns out she was only doing a neighbour a favour by walking his dog. The dog was a pug named Sampson - who was clearly not trained or accustomed to dog parks.

So we walked Joan - who at this point was in a stretcher - to the ambulance and said our goodbyes. Joan was so sweet and I really hope it was nothing too serious.
I wonder if I'll ever know?

js

To the Park with Deya and The Grace

Yesterday I stayed home with my little girl.
